Why don't the firefighters collect at the door anymore?
For the last 25+ years the firefighters have been collecting for The Salvation Army food drive by picking up bags of donated food door to door on the first Saturday in December. However with the explosive expansion of Milton in recent years this method has become infeasible. In order to continue in the community minded spirit of this effort the Firefighters, in collaboration with The Salvation Army, have expanded the scope of this food drive to encompass the whole community by establishing collection "stations" where citizens can drop off food for donation. The firefighters continue to support the Food Drive by giving leadership to these collection stations as well as continuing to receive food throughout the year at each of the local firehalls.
Where does the food go?
Food donated to the Milton Community Food Drive is housed in our warehouse facility at 100 Nipissing Rd. and is used to supply the Milton Salvation Army Food Bank throughout the year. While a portion of the food received will go towards filling special Christmas hampers for those in need many people do not realize that donations received this Christmas will comprise the bulk of all food distributed through the Milton Salvation Army Food Bank in 2012. The Salvation Army is currently the only non-partisan food bank in operation in the Milton/Campbellville community.
Who receives the food?
The food is received by citizens of Milton/Campbellville who live at or below the poverty line. In 2011 we served approx 600 people at our food bank and with a consistent increase in new clients anticipate a much greater number in 2012. Clients of the food bank are asked to provide identification and financial documentation to ensure that they qualify for the food bank program.
What if I miss the food drive day? Where do I donate food?
Food can be donated throughout the year at The Salvation Army Khi Community #3-100 Nipissing Rd, at the Fire Stations on Steeles or Derry, or at our donation pantries located at: Metro, Loblaws Superstore, or Walmart.
